The Last Yugoslavia
In an era of globalization, one might assume that the age of the nation-state has passed and that conflicts surrounding national identity are becoming increasingly irrelevant in the twenty-first century. However, concerns over national identity remain deeply present. In navigating the complexities of Serbian identity, the artist examines the liminality of Serbia by drawing on the physicality of buildings, their historical significance, and an autoethnographic self-portrait to reflect on personal identity through place.
The graphic renderings of Serbian mountains and architecture offer an authentic and grounded depiction of the present-day landscape, while simultaneously redefining and reimagining identity for those living in the post-socialist context of former Yugoslavia.
