Untitled

Artist: Paraskevi Stathaki, Greece
Description:

Untitled (2024) is a wooden sculpture created from reclaimed materials the artist collected from the street and discarded objects. This act of reuse reflects her interest in giving forgotten materials a "second chance", transforming abandonment into creation. Her broader practice explores cycles of creation, destruction, and regeneration.

In this piece, there is a tension between two distinct planes: the foreground and the background. The background contains elements that evoke decay, the passage of time, and abandonment, whereas the foreground features a sharp, dynamic sculptural form that appears to counteract or neutralize the imagery behind it. This juxtaposition creates a confrontation between the old and the new, generating a sense of deconstruction and reconstruction.

These elements may allude to the migrant experience, where individuals leave behind a past life in an effort to build a new one. The different materials and layers can symbolize both the remnants of the past that migrants carry with them and the new structures they attempt to establish in an unfamiliar environment. Furthermore, the degradation in the background and the assemblage of heterogeneous elements express the fluidity of identity, as individuals redefine themselves through new experiences. The dark tones and sharp forms further underscore the internal conflict one endures while striving to reconcile past and present identities.

Additionally, the interaction between the green three-dimensional element and the flat background symbolizes the process of integration into a new social and cultural environment. Ultimately, the overall sense of instability or fragmentation evokes feelings of displacement or the search for a stable point of reference.
