2001

Artist: Alexandra Stamo, Greece
Description:

This artwork combines digital manipulation and traditional painting. Edited in Photoshop and then painted with acrylics, it contrasts the "present" and future in digital form with the classical technique of painting, which has shaped our lives for centuries.

Intense colors emphasize key elements, creating movement within the human forms. The scene features passersby and shadows, with a central focus on a stroller and suitcase, referencing the year 2001 - the year of the artist’s birth. The stationary stroller and suitcase within the moving crowd symbolize the experience of living in a place without ever truly belonging.

Based on a personal story, the artwork reflects her family’s journey in search of a better life, exploring the uncertainty of leaving home for an unfamiliar land. It evokes the challenges of making life-changing decisions and the everyday reality of a family that chose to start over. This work is deeply emotional for the artist, as it embodies thoughts, struggles, time, and the pursuit of progress - a visual representation of a family leaving behind their homeland in search of a better "tomorrow".
