Montessori Tank
The artwork is strongly influenced by pop art and comics and it’s constructed by joining pieces of wood through notches, without the use of glue. It presents a vehicle resembling a war tank, constructed entirely from MDF, evoking the aesthetic of a children's toy. Centered around the theme of migration due to war, it engages with concepts of movement, transition, and transformation. As a vehicle, it symbolizes a journey in both literal and metaphorical terms. Adorning its surface are various symbols, such as an upward-pointing arrow, which signifies the pursuit of continuous self-improvement, and a hammer, representing hard work and perseverance, elements you carry with you when migrating to another country in pursuit of a better future. Additionally, a cloud and several stars complement the composition, symbolizing dreams and life aspirations.
The tank-like form alludes to a state of warfare, which may serve as the impetus for an individual's displacement. At the same time, it metaphorically reflects the struggle one must endure to realize their dreams - an endeavor that often necessitates passing through the stage of migration. The hybrid nature of the sculpture - neither entirely functional nor purely abstract - mirrors the dual existence of migrants who straddle multiple cultural, linguistic, and social landscapes. While the sculpture appears cohesive, it is composed of separate elements, highlighting the tension between unity and fragmentation. This duality speaks to the experience of migrants who often find themselves oscillating between different communities, questioning where they truly belong. It serves as a visual metaphor for the struggle and hope that accompany the pursuit of a better future, encapsulating the emotional and structural realities of people seeking opportunities beyond their place of origin.
