Living without Leaving
The artwork Living without Leaving tackles themes of identity, migration, and belonging, as outlined in the competition guidelines. The blue-and-yellow trams, the only dynamic element in the frame, symbolize the possibility of escape and a brighter future. However, despite their movement, they ultimately lead to inevitable ruin - a symbolic end of the world. Their colors directly reference the Ukrainian flag, reflecting a nation fighting against dark forces and a tragic fate, yet unable to find an escape despite its struggle.
Another key element is a man, head bowed, isolated on a staircase. Though he, too, stands out in color, he remains distant from his suitcase, passive and resigned to his inability to leave the place where he is trapped. His colors reference the Palestinian flag, representing a nation whose cries go unheard in a world unwilling to offer refuge.
Both focal elements stand out against the monotonous monochrome background, emphasizing their significance through their strong primary colors. While the piece may initially seem entirely defeatist and pessimistic, its goal is to convey a profound sense of entrapment without false embellishment - only awareness of the depth of this issue can inspire the first step toward change.
