Makedonium

Artist: Rebeka Abdagić, Bosnia Herzegovina
Description:

Makedonium is a painting from the ongoing series Colored Revolution or How to Paint a Monument, which began in 2021. Inspired by brutalist monuments from the former Yugoslavia, the series currently includes interpretations of 18 monuments and continues to grow. Its aim is to bring neglected memorials back into public awareness and to critically examine their place in today’s political and cultural landscape.

The series seeks to preserve the memory of these monuments, reframe them in a contemporary context, and return them to society as meaningful symbols - reminders of a shared history and lessons not to repeat past mistakes. These structures stand as witnesses of an unified fight against fascism.

This particular monument is located in Kruševo, North Macedonia. Designed by Jordan and Iskra Grabul and completed in 1974, the monument is reimagined here to highlight its continued relevance and the powerful legacy it represents.
