Mobile

Artist: Metodija Jovanov, North Macedonia
Description:

Mobile is a photography/scenography piece that explores the paradox of movement without departure - of existing in motion while never truly leaving. Using a scanner, a curated selection of personal objects is captured in a moment, creating a still-life of transition. Crumpled receipts, scattered banknotes and coins, a Polaroid photo, a cigarette - each element suggests movement, yet together they remain frozen, reflecting the way we carry fragments of our past with us. The keys symbolize both access and restriction - the ability to unlock new spaces or remain bound to familiar ones, representing choices of where to go, what to return to, and what to leave behind. The pills, on the other hand, speak to internal movement, hinting at escape, control, or the delicate balance between presence and absence, stillness and motion. The composition engages with the theme by questioning the nature of mobility. Moving does not always mean leaving, and to live is to remain in a constant state of motion whether physically shifting or internally navigating change.

The objects serve as traces of past and present, reminding us that we are never fully here or there, but always carrying echoes of where we've been. The handwritten note with the phrase "Wherever you go, there you are" underscores the idea that no matter how far one travels or how much one attempts to escape, the self remains constant.
